Adjacent to the river Seia, in the heart of Central Portugal is the vast Quinta do Pinheiro farm which stretches over 30 acres of land. It’s charm is enhanced by two waterfalls, and a stream which flows into the river and has a little natural pool. It is a place for people who want to go back to the wild and be self-sufficient.
This is a perfect place for those who are searching for peace and nature, with all the sheer beauty that comes with it.
In front of the house there is a fruit orchard with cherry trees, peach trees, plums, figs, chestnuts, grapes, sharon fruits (persimmon), apples, pears, apricots,oranges, nectarines, pomegranate, hazelnuts and an almond grove. Furthermore there are also raspberries, blackberries and some strawberries.
A part of the ground is flat and suitable for agriculture, another part is woody, and a part is rocky. The house is on the flat part, and is partly made of granite, and has a habitable area of 200 m². The house is Scandinavian design as it was made by Danish people.
The nearest (and only) neighbors are about 400 meters behind a hill, so there is not a single house in sight in the area near the house. Travancinha is the nearest village, about 2 km away, as it is on the other side of another hill, it is almost inconspicuous, except for the sound of church bells. Here are a few small shops, a post office, a bakery, cafes and until recently a village school. The house consists of a ground floor with three bedrooms and storage areas. With indoor and outdoor stairs, a mezzanine with the living room can be reached. There is a short staircase to the first floor, with kitchen and bathroom. An outside staircase leads to the upper chamber. The living room, kitchen and upper chamber have chimneys.
There is a rooftop terrace on a natural rock with a view on a man made water basin and beautiful views over the valley. One of the walls of the house is the natural rock in a way making a wall of nature. The house is habitable but needs refurbishment in terms of adding modern features such as double glazing, insulation of roof and walls or central heating. However,there is electricity, telephone and internet. The water to the house comes from a drill hole with water coming from 30 meters under the ground. On the ground around the house there is a flower garden with a wide kaleidoscope of plants and flowers. Most impressive being a 30 year old Don Pedro cactus.
Near the house there is a large barn of 200 m². Quinta do Pinheiro used to be a sheep farm with a herd of up to 100 sheep, for the production of milk for making the local Serra da Estrela cheese. The field next to the barn is completely fenced and has grassland of about 6 acres, there are also terraced fields on the slope below the house comprising about 12 acres which are mostly fenced and are ideal for free running horses. Next to the barn there is a small olive grove with 12 trees, which are used for the production of olive oil.
In terms of swimming in the summer the stream has a little pool where you can go and have a quick dip.
The river is also quite good for swimming, and would make a good place for water activities such as kayaking and canoeing.
The accessibility is moderate. The last 400 meters are quite rocky and thus better suited for a 4×4 Jeep, which also means that few motored vehicles pass by, giving the place the serenity and the possibility to really listen to nature. Seia, Nelas and Oliveira do Hospital are about 15 km away. Seia is a medium sized city and Oliveira do Hospital is a smaller town. In these towns are important facilities such as restaurants, shops, supermarkets, post office, banks, medical clinic, schools, vocational education, library, small hospital and weekly market. In the case of Nelas there is a train station with connections to Lisbon, Porto and to France. Seia is also the last place you pass before driving into the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, in these mountains you can ski in the winter.
Larger cities such as Coimbra, Guarda and Viseu are approximately 80, 60 and 40 km away.
